Body Dysmorphic Disorder: Awareness and Ethical Working Practice in Aesthetic and Cosmetic Treatment Settings

It is recognised that working in the field of aesthetics and cosmetic procedures that you will undoubtedly come across a number of clients that present with symptoms of Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) on a regular basis. As a clinician it is critically important that you are aware of potential challenges you may face when working with clients and remain ethically mindful within your practice. Yet it can be difficult to always spot the signs which may be of concern with regards to BDD and even more problematic to know what to do when it is recognised. With clients who are experiencing symptoms of BDD it has been discovered that fewer than 10% will be satisfied with treatments they receive, which could leave you open for criticism, complaints and legal action. With this in mind it is worth considering what you can do to work in the best interest of both your client and yourself to uphold your reputation within this rapidly expanding industry. Issues covered during the day include a comprehensive package of knowledge and skills based around the following: Awareness- Definition of BDD, associated problems and differentiation between BDD and other mental health conditions. Recognition- How to spot the signs of BDD. Risks- Common pitfalls and risks when working with BDD as an aesthetic or cosmetic practitioner. Reflection- Reflecting on personal practice. Enhancing awareness of what you bring into the room when working with clients and identifying helpful ways to approach clients. Practical tips- Knowing what to do when concerns arise and where to sign post clients for additional support. While it is not your role to treat BDD you will likely be a first port of call for those experiencing symptoms of it and this training event would help in knowing how to prepare them for a referral to specialist support. In the long term this would not only help maintain professional integrity within the industry but could make a significant difference to someone's quality of life.
